iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 Overview

Apple released iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 on September 15, 2025 as free over-the-air updates. They introduce Liquid Glass, Apple's new translucent design language that reflects light and lets background content show through across icons, buttons, and menus.

The update focuses on three pillars for 2026: Apple Intelligence integration, live translation, and multitasking.

Compatible Devices

iOS 26 works on:

  • iPhone 11 series and later
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation and later)

iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max stop at iOS 18. Apple also released iOS 18.7 for those older models.

iPadOS 26 works on:

All iPads that supported iPadOS 18, except the 7th-generation iPad (10.2-inch). This is the first iPadOS to drop that model.

iPadOS 26: What is Different

What's New in iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 (March 2026)

Apple shipped iOS 26.4 six weeks after 26.3, adding:

  • Playlist Playground (beta) in Apple Music: AI generates playlists from text prompts
  • 8 new emoji: orca, trombone, landslide, ballet dancer, distorted face, and three others
  • Purchase Sharing: adult family members can use their own payment method, not just the organizer
  • Improved keyboard accuracy, urgent reminders, offline Music Recognition, and Reduce Motion improvements for Liquid Glass

How to Update Safely

  1. Settings > General > Software Update
  2. Back up first (iCloud or computer) – updates are 1–6GB
  3. Plug in and use Wi-Fi. In Nigeria, download at night to avoid data charges
  4. If you are on iOS 18, you will see the option to upgrade to iOS 26 if your device is supported

Do not install "iOS 26.4.1" profiles from Telegram or YouTube links. Apple signs updates only through Settings.

Should You Update?

Yes, if you have iPhone 11 or newer. iOS 26 is stable, and 26.4 fixes CarPlay, keyboard, and security issues from earlier builds. The Liquid Glass design uses more GPU, so expect slightly warmer phones for the first 48 hours while indexing finishes.

If you have iPhone XS/XR or 7th-gen iPad, stay on iOS 18.7 – you will still get security patches, but not the new features.
